“What Happens In Vegas” is a nonsensical romantic comedy with a likeable stupidity that you just can’t ignore. The filmmakers had 3 elements to use in their marketing machine, two big names, Cameron and Ashton, plus the key word Vegas. For young audiences, Cameron Diaz, Ashton Kutcher and the word Vegas are the right combination of coins for a poker machine to spit out a jackpot. Yes, this film is guaranteed to set cash registers ringing at the box office but sadly it won’t satisfy all the critics. It’s a lighthearted, leave your brain at the door, and soak up the stupidity, kind of film that casual film-going audiences take to despite its many deficiencies. Like a freight train out of control, the film is fast-paced with the low-brow gags keep coming thick and fast, usually of the hit and miss variety but unfortunately, more miss than hit. The film’s superficial and predictable plotline is nothing more than an air-headed mess with very few laughs making it past the elementary level. It will definitely have a strong appeal to juvenile audiences, with plenty of mindless chuckles for teens and 20-somethings.
After an alcohol fuelled night of debauchery Diaz and Kutcher get married on a whim having only known each other for a couple of hours. To add insult to injury, the next morning Kutcher puts Diaz’s quarter in a poker machine slot that sets off a $3 million dollar jackpot. Who will get the money? Will they get a divorce? Will they share the money? Or will they stay married and live happily ever after? Well you don’t need too many IQ points to predict this one. It’s “The War Of The Roses” for the teen set with Diaz and Kutcher bickering for 90 minutes or so until they work out the obvious. Diaz does her ditzy blonde thing nicely, while Kutcher resembles more of a j-crew model than an actor, yet the two share an on-screen chemistry that will make Demi squirm. If you think you have seen it all before, you have! Do you remember the Ashton Kutcher / Brittany Murphy film “Just Married”? Well this film plays the same one-note comedy symphony right through to the very end.
With “Dude Where’s My Car”, “Just Married”, “My Boss’ Daughter” and “Guess Who?” to his credit Ashton Kutcher has once again proven he’s a specialist when it comes to no-brainer comedies. Kutcher has a goofy quality that appeals to the ladies while Diaz has an air-headed, dumb-blonde charm that appeals to men. On paper it seems like a winning combo but in reality it turns out to be somewhat of a fizzer because of a weak script and poor characterizations. Having said all that, many cinemagoers enjoy ditzy, dimwitted comedies, that’s not to say, If you like this film you’re dimwitted and ditzy, but a lot of people like watching ditzy and dimwitted because it makes them feel good about themselves because nobody likes to think of themselves as ditzy and dimwitted. Does that make sense? In other words Kutcher and Diaz make good cannon fodder and crapola can still offer some entertainment value.
On a positive note, “What Happens In Vegas” has a fun factor that somehow manages to overshadow some of the film’s problems. Ashton and Cameron have a watch ability factor that cannot be denied. The two leads are appealing, although their characters may not be. In support we have the 2 Dennis,’ Dennis Miller as a judge and Dennis Farina as Diaz’s boss. Both do their bit and manage to steal a few genuine laughs. In fact, the jokes in the film are rapid fire. Although, many of them don’t hit the mark, some do and the pacing is such that you don’t have to wait long before a gag pops up that you can have a bit of a giggle about. Actually, the best gag and possibly the film's biggest laught appears during the end credits. That's right, it's the scene that you thought you had missed but wanted to see and it shows up when you least expect it.
Well what are you waiting for, roll the dice and take a chance on this lighthearted trip to Vegas, you might just enjoy some of the shenanigans even more thank you “think”…..That’s right, don’t “think” about it and just go along for the wild ride, that’s the only way you will get the most out of this one. Whatever the case, for Diaz or Kutcher fans, this film may be the winning hand that they have been looking for. Just remember, "What Happens In Vegas" doesn't stay in Vegas it comes back to haunt you in New York or whatever city you live in for that matter.
