John C. Reilly has been in too many films to mention and finally with “Walk Hard” he gets a starring role in a film worthy of his dead-pan talents. From the producers of “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Superbad” comes “Walk Hard”, the epic musical bio-pic of fictitious singing sensation Dewey Cox. Made with the same degree of detail as the Johnny Cash bio pic “Walk The Line”, “Walk Hard” is both side-splittingly hilarious and to a degree outrageously stupid, but above all, it is an epic of its kind. I use the word epic in that the film is amazingly detailed and grand in its scope for a spoof film. “Walk Hard” is the musical bio-pic to end all bio-pics. Dewey has more affairs than any musician on the planet, takes more mind-altering drugs than Keith Richards and has more hit records than Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and The Beatles put together. Apart from his hit records he also manages to find time to produce a ton of children but when his wife hands him the divorce papers he pleads “please let me keep my monkey”.
An amazing virtue of the film is that John C. Reilly does all his own singing and proves he can really sing with the best of them. Some of the songs are genuinely quite catchy, from the title track “Walk Hard” to “Guilty As Charged” to “Take My Hand”, all are standouts. The film even has a number of humorous cameos from well known rock ‘n’ roll legends such as Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and The Beatles. “Walk Hard” may not be for all tastes, yes, there are a few shocking sight gags that may test some audiences, but you cannot deny the skill and craftsmanship in which the film has been made. How John C. Reilly manages to keep a straight-face through all of the stupidity and make it seem like he is playing a real-life musician every step of the way is somewhat of an acting miracle. If you like musicals, bio-pics or you have a wacky sense of humor, then “Walk Hard” is just the ticket for you. As far as spoof films go, “Walk Hard” hits the mark.
