Amanda Bynes is one of the best teen actresses in Hollywood. It’s just a shame that this film doesn’t completely click. It’s a modern-day retelling of the age-old Snow White story but this time set in a college. Sounds like a good idea, well, it’s a great idea, just like the “Taming Of The Shrew” retelling was when they made “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999). While “10 Things” worked out well, somehow “Sydney White” gets a little lost in translation. The film sees Bynes arrive at College, she attempts to pledge a sorority, her plans of sisterhood are thwarted by a campus witch (Sara Paxton) and she winds up in a dorm with 7 socially challenged dorks. Sydney must then fight for the rights of all the geeks on the campus and find her prince charming in the process. It’s a story with great potential. The concept of the film feels like the correct fit for Bynes and it should have been but somehow from the page to the screen things didn’t quite reach their mark.  

Bynes is perfectly cast as Sydney White or should I say Snow White but ultimately it’s the script that lets her down and maybe her hairstylist. In previous films Bynes looks great and has been full of kinetic energy, proving that she is not just a talented actress but somewhat of a natural comedian. The script sadly takes away her sparkle, she’s too subdued and plays it too straight for most of the film and the fun factor fades pretty quickly. At around 108 minutes, “Sydney White” is a tad overlong and maybe a little too full of ideas that don’t quite work. The sorority stuff seems to wear out its welcome after a while; you can only take so much of it. If you are a fan of teen movies check it out, you may get something from it, everyone else, well let’s just say you have been warned, “Sydney White” is only lukewarm at best.
