I went into a preview screening of this one knowing very little, just the film’s title and cast. Does beefcake Gerard Butler and Oscar Winner Hilary Swank sound like a mismatched couple to you? I thought so too, but trust me, once you have seen the film’s opening scene you will forget all about it.  The film kicks off with a pre-credit sequence that is nothing short of brilliant. Full of real emotion; from a heated argument, to reconciliation and beyond. In this opening sequence we feel all aspects of their relationship and then some. Both Butler and Swank invest so much energy and timing into the sequence that you can’t help but feel how will the rest of the film hold up to anything you have seen thus far.  Yes, the sequence is truly that good.  The good news is Swank and Butler have another scene later on in the Irish highlands that reminds us once again of their chemistry.

It is not long before the film delivers its first shock. After the credits roll we are dealt quite a jolt, when we discover that Butler is now in-fact dead. How can this be, Butler is the film’s second lead. Yes, it is a bit of a downer that he’s dead, but then we get swept up in the film’s real story, the journey one must go on while dealing with such grief. The neat thing is the film doesn’t go down the road of becoming “a ghost” film. There is no supernatural element at all. As it turns out Butler has left behind a series of mail messages that will help Swank cope with the loss. Each letter signs off in the same manner, "P.S. I Love You". Despite his early departure from the movie, Butler, nevertheless, still gets plenty of screen-time with perfectly timed flashbacks to points in their relationship that is both hilarious and touching.

Butler puts in a great comedic performance as the Irish-heartthrob and brings plenty of charismatic charm to the table, a total transformation from his portrayal of the powerful Spartan King in “300”. Audiences that have only seen Butler in “300” will be gob-smacked by his cheeky yet sympathetic performance in this one. Swank once again consolidates why she is one of the best actresses in the new millennium; all her instincts are on target. The supporting cast are also in fine form, Lisa Kudrow is a lot of fun with her usual routine Friends-stick, Harry Connick Jr proves he is more than just a singer (yes, he should really appear in more films) and Thomas Henry Morgan (a Butler look-a-like) as Swank’s new Irish love interest shows that he definitely has potential in his likeable supporting role.  Full of whimsical romanticism, “P.S. Love You” should have strong appeal with females from all walks of life; mothers, girlfriends, wives and grandmothers. You could say it’s the perfect date movie, just make sure you have tissues on hand and prepare yourself for some unexpected belly laughs.
