This inferior sequel to the Disney box office hit “National Treasure” sees Nicolas Cage’s treasure hunter Ben Gates trying to clear his family name. When Gate’s great-great-grandfather is listed as a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, what do you do? The answer is simple, you go on an adventure to uncover the truth and that’s exactly what you get with this sequel. Unfortunately, what you also get is way too much dialogue and some flimsy sets. At 124 minutes the film more than outstays its welcome. At 90 minutes it would have been a much slicker-faster-ride.
Despite its shortcomings, the film does have an amazing cast. Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel all return from the original. Add to that, Ed Harris, Helen Mirren and Bruce Greenwood, in a great turn as the President of the United States, round out the high profile supporting cast. The funny thing is Greenwood is almost type-cast as a President these days (he played JFK in “Thirteen Days”), a far-cry from the sex-crazed teen he once played in “The Malibu Bikini Shop” way back in the 1980s. Wow, with this many names on the team sheet and this much acting talent on display, the bar is set high and likewise so are audience expectations. Now, if only the film matched the cast list we would truly have something.
The bottom-line is, we expect more from “National Treasure 2”, but unfortunately we get less, however, the film does have some good points. The plot is quite intriguing to begin with and the filmmakers go to the trouble of showing Abe’s assassination in a historical flashback. Some of the action set-pieces are okay and the suspense occasionally builds well, a standout sequence being when Cage holds the President hostage in a cave while the President’s security team is sent into frenzy. The film, however, plods along plot-wise and tends to get tiresome after a while, plus, the waterlogged, sound-stage ending is a little bit too cheesy for its own good. Nevertheless, this overblown sequel made a packet at the box office and I am sure if Disney can get Cage back to ham it up once again they will certainly make another one.
