“Good Luck Chuck” is a film that tries to sell itself on being a romantic comedy, when it really is a disgustingly juvenile vulgar comedy, jam-packed full of cheap laughs. The romance is all gone because how can you really believe in the romance part when you have been witness to the filth and depravity Dane Cook gets up to before, in between and after his moments with Jessica Alba. The film just doesn’t work.  Do we really need revolting rubbish like this polluting our multiplexes? Well sadly, I suppose there is a market for it. Alba fans are sure to watch it and some teenagers might like the smut of it, but how Jessica Alba got mixed up in this sordid mess is anybody’s guess. As they say, sometimes the best bits are in the trailer, and that’s certainly the case with “Good Luck Chuck”.

You would have to class this film as an outrageous comedy as opposed to a romantic comedy because it has one of the most outrageous premises you are ever likely to experience. The plot revolves around a dentist, Charlie Logan (Dane Cook), who is considered a good luck charm because all the women that sleep with him find true love and wedding bells immediately after their sexual encounter.  Why does this happen? We are treated to an opening scene of spin-the-bottle (circa 1985) that is supposed to explain it all, but it doesn’t help the premise much, looking like nothing more than a cheap left-over from a bad 1980s teen movie. This early sequence shows Cook have a hex put on him by a young gothic chick with a bad attitude and if you can except that, you might get something out of it, but if you don’t, well then you will begin to believe how bad this film really is.  Also, Cook’s best friend, Stu (Dan Fogler) a pudgy, sex-crazed  gynecologist, does have a couple of funny lines at times but the filmmakers have gone out of their way to make him that repulsive that his character no longer becomes acceptable comedy relief. Instead he becomes a complete turn off as he emerges as the film’s central outlet for smut. You can only take so much of his antics and one soon begins to cringe whenever he appears on the screen. The same can be said about his ultimate love interest, a woman who turns out to be a three-breasted sideshow.

Dane Cook tries hard with the material, maybe a little too hard and Jessica Alba is sweet at times but it’s a real mixed-up mess. There are a few genuine slapstick moments with Alba, the best being an incident at her work at the penguin aquarium. How Alba manages to fall down a slide and to top it off smack her chin, chip a tooth and fall into a pool is quite amusing. There’s also another scene where she clumsily gets out of a car, catches her skirt in the door, only to reveal her penguin-clad underwear. In another one, she is not concentrating while walking with her date on a footpath and smashes into a pole. What takes away from any of these genuine comedy sight-gag moments is its constant barrage of crude humor. For every okay joke there are 3 or 4 really tasteless ones. But it doesn’t just end there.

When the filmmakers began work on this one, it seems all standards were thrown out of the window. “Good Luck Chuck” is full of unnecessary sex scenes. How they got actresses to appear in these stupidly choreographed sex routines with Dane Cook is anybody’s guess?   All I can say is that these starlets must have been pretty hard-up for the work to agree to do these “type” of scenes. After bearing witness to this nonsense, how are we supposed to seriously take to the romance elements between Cook and Alba? You just can’t and you would be stupid to let yourself fall into the trap. To top it off, just when you think the film is over, we are treated to a disgusting moment in the end credits with Dane Cook and a fluffy toy penguin. Just like the end credits “Good Luck Chuck” is a film destined to leave a bad taste in your mouth.
