Disney animation meets live-action with “Enchanted”, an exuberant, feel-good fantasy with warmth, humor and some neat song and dance numbers. The film follows a beautiful red-haired princess named Giselle (Amy Adams) from an animated cartoon world to the real-life-hustle-and bustle of a 21st century city. How did she get there? Simple, she is banished to the modern-day metropolis of New York by a wicked queen (Susan Sarandon).  We are then presented with a fish-out-of-water scenario that sees Giselle trying to survive in the concrete jungle of the city. Lost and disenchanted in an out of place world, Giselle, is rescued by guess who? McDreamy, or should I say Patrick Dempsey.  Here, Dempsey, is perfectly cast as a suit-wearing divorce lawyer who unmistakably becomes a modern-day Prince Charming.  In the meantime, Giselle’s fairytale prince (James Marsden) comes looking for her and winds up in plenty of hair-raising situations.

While watching “Enchanted” I couldn’t help but be reminded of 1980s films such as “Splash” and “Mannequin”, here the formula pretty much works just as well, with the added novelty of the fairytale animated world meeting downtown Manhattan.  I must say the transitioning of the two worlds blends nicely. To add to the fun, a few lively song and dance performances are thrown into the mix. They jump out at you when you least expect them and are certainly a pleasant surprise. The vibrant central park sequence being the standout. It also helps when you have screen legend, Julie Andrews (Disney’s "Mary Poppins" and "The Princess Diaries") on board as the narrator of the proceedings.

Amy Adams is delightful as the princess, she possesses a fresh faced innocence in a role it seems she is almost born to play. James Marsden is hilariously clueless as the fairytale prince and Patrick Dempsey has the looks, charm and charisma to pull off McDreamy….sorry Prince Charming.  Apart from a supporting role opposite Reese Witherspoon in “Sweet Home Alabama”, it’s been quite a while since Patrick Dempsey has been seen on the big screen.  Dempsey was once a lead in a few popular teen films during the latter half of the 1980s, such as “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Loverboy” but things somehow went west for him during the 1990s. Due to his most recent success on TV’s “Grey’s Anatomy” his acting career has been given something of a re-birth. With clever casting like this I am sure he will be in more romantic comedies of this kind for some time to come. “Enchanted” is Disney firing on all cylinders, take the whole family along, I am sure everyone will be swept up in the wonderment.
