“Double Dragon” is one of the early attempts at turning an arcade game into a live-action feature film. I caught this film during its brief cinema run back in 1994. It was a late afternoon session and I was with some old school buddies. I didn’t think much of it at the time, neither did they and now after revisiting it again, nearly 14 years later, it seems more juvenile than ever. “Double Dragon” looks a little outdated these days and comes with a cavalcade of cheap special effects that look corny by today’s standards. I think the major misstep of the film was its release date.  The video game of the same name was released in 1988 while the film didn’t hit cinemas until 1994. Big mistake! Instead of striking while the iron was still hot, things on the “Double Dragon” front were now lukewarm and “Street Fighter” had now emerged as the arcade-junkies game of choice. Kung Fu had a new name and it wasn’t “Double Dragon”. While “Double Dragon” breezed in and out of cinemas in November 1994 grossing only $2.3 million, the big screen version of “Street Fighter” starring “The Muscles From Brussels”  Jean-Claude Van Damme and Australian pop-princess Kylie Minogue was released a couple of days before Christmas 1994 and clocked up a neat $33 million. Both films offer a similar level of entertainment, cheap kung fu thrills, a few laughs, colorful costumes, cardboard sets with explosive stunts and plenty of mindless fun.
