Just when we thought the Sword and Sandal genre had seen it all with “300”, along comes “Beowulf”. For the uninitiated “Bewoulf” is an age-old European tale about a warrior who must defeat a terrifying monster called Grendel who is tearing up villages and towns. Based on the classic poem, the “Beowulf” tale has been brought to screen in various incarnations throughout the years. Christopher Lambert starred in “Beowulf” (1999), Gerard Butler starred in “Beowulf and Grendel” (2005) and more recently Chris Bruno starred in the TV movie “Grendel” (2007). It seems everyone wants to bring their own interpretation to the screen. This latest version of “Beowulf” went all out to top the others. It was made on a massive budget of $150 million and was filmed in 3-D. I was fortunate enough to catch “Beowulf” in IMAX 3-D and let’s just say it was somewhat of a visual feast. It was like spending 2 hours on a theme park ride. It was that action-packed, loud, over-the-top and in your face, that I am sure I will have to watch it again in 2-D just to get the most out of the story.
Director Robert Zemeckis (“Back To The Future”) has cleverly crafted a film that makes perfect use of today’s groundbreaking technology. Grendel is certainly one of the most frightening monsters to hit the big screen in the new millennium. Also, how they made 50 year old Ray Winstone look and perform like an unstoppable warrior is an achievement in itself. The groundbreaking imagery of this film has to be seen to be believed. “Beowulf” is a perfect fit for today’s Playstation crowd. It is fast-paced, full of action, it has plenty of frights, a terrifying beast that is sure to scare more than just young children, not to mention the mother of all monsters, a CGI-nude Angelina Jolie (as the scintillatingly seductive mother of the beast) who is the icing on this lavishly produced spectacle. “Beowulf” is an experience that is well worth taking, especially with the glasses. I cannot recall ever seeing another 3-D movie that works as well as this one.
