If a film can stay afloat just by the buoyancy of its star alone, “27 Dresses”, is that film. Katherine Heigl is an absolute delight. She charmingly melts up every frame of this film. That’s not to say that Heigl is the only positive to come out of “27 Dresses”, it is a really fun film with a neat concept, but without Heigl at the helm, possessing such an immense likeability, in the hands of a wrongly cast actresses it could have so easily been a disaster. With the likes of Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock and others fading away from the romantic comedy set, Heigl is like a breath of fresh air. She added charm to both “The Ringer” (2005) and ”Knocked Up” and now with “27 Dresses” she becomes an outright star. James Marsden is also very good in this. Marsden has had a fantastic run of roles lately from “Superman Returns” to “Hairspray” to “Enchanted” to this film; here he plays a newspaper writer to great effect. Once thing is for sure “27 Dresses” will have strong appeal with female audiences everywhere. In fact I was one of the few males in the entire cinema and let’s just say the overflow of estrogen must have wore off on me as I had quite a good time with “27 Dresses”.
Here’s the plot in a nutshell. Heigl is in love with her boss (Ed Burns), her boss doesn’t know it. Heigl’s sister (Malin Akerman) returns home from overseas and falls for Heigl’s boss and the two get engaged. Heigl is annoyed by all of this but reluctantly goes along for the ride and supports her sister. In the meantime a newspaper writer (James Marsden) sets out to write an article on the relationship troubled Heigl who is always the bridesmaid and never a bride. The writer ends up falling for Heigl and feels bad about writing the article about her. Will Heigl fall for the writer and forgive him for exposing her failed love-life in the article or will she manage to break up her sister’s wedding and wind up with her boss who she has always loved from day one. Will Heigl get her happy ending?
“27 Dresses” is funny, charming, fast-paced and well-acted. If there is anything that takes away from it at all, maybe, the script needed to be just that little bit better. It is funny but never hilarious. Smart enough to pass but not intelligent enough to break new ground. It all plays out just as you would expect from a mainstream romantic comedy, everything in the script is routine, but it’s Heigl that’s the X factor and deserves most of the credit. Let’s just say Heigl’s montage where she tries on all “27 Dresses” of the title is the one thing that will stick in your memory long after you see this film. It’s amazing to find an actress that makes even the most ghastly of outfits look appealing and that’s only scratching the surface of Heigl’s ability.
