Tony's Pick Of The Flicks

Top 10 Films Reviewed

July 2008

Mamma Mia
“Mamma Mia” is an enjoyable delight that bubbles with energy. The ABBA music has an infectious spirit and the toe-tapping songs will have you dancing in the aisles.

The Dark Knight
It’s worth watching as a tribute to the diversity of Heath Ledger’s talents but as far as being hailed as “the greatest superhero film ever made”, you would have to be as crazy as The Joker himself to believe all that hype.

The Love Guru
If Myers thought he was onto another box office bonanza of a franchise, well let’s just say….there is something terribly wrong with his aim. This one hits the cubicle floor and has no chance of it ever reaching the can.

Iron Man
Hip, cool & totally “hot-rod red”, “Iron Man” will knock your socks off!

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
It’s a balancing act between romance, relationships and vulgar comedy and somehow it all plays out rather nicely, like a finely tuned trapeze act.

Smart People
Arty, intelligent, melancholy and brimming with understated wit; “Smart People” magnifies life’s frustrations to comedic and dramatic effect.

Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
You have been on this Indy rollercoaster many times before and you know all the twists and turns….including the punch-lines.

Across The Universe
“Across The Universe” plays out like an endless stream of MTV music videos, consisting of weird and wacky visionary that presents The Beatles music like you have never seen it before.

Made Of Honor
Light, fluffy and full or romantic froth, a pleasant way to spend 100 minutes or so.

Drillbit Taylor
“Drillbit Taylor” is a fairly harmless teen comedy with some genuine belly laughs, a school bully that resembles a young John Cusack and all-round good performances from the young teens.

Sex And The City: The Movie
Serves as candy for women, it’s a sugary concoction that provides some whimsical romance, light melodrama, some raunchy discussions, a few sex scenes and plenty of fashion and glamour.

The Incredible Hulk
“The Incredible Hulk” is watchable at best; it engages only at odd intervals, has a few nice CGI Special effects sequences, lots of dull tiresome dialogue and an almost non-existent plot.

January - February - March 2008

No Country For Old Men
It plays out at times like a mystery thriller, a cops-and-robbers film, a chase film, a complex look at a psychopathic killer, an in-depth study of the human condition or a damning view of the society we live in. Click here for full review

Juno
Like a bittersweet kiss from heaven, never has a film about teen pregnancy been so quirky, unique and tender.

Eastern Promises
“Eastern Promises” is a film that is masterfully brought to life by a filmmaker at the top of his game, although I often wonder sometimes…. does it all have to be this graphic?

3:10 To Yuma
As tensions mount and tempers flare, we are treated to one engaging dialogue sequence after the next; we become engulfed in the psyches of these fascinating characters and it all makes for compelling viewing.

American Gangster
With the wrong cast this film could have so easily been an epic misfire but when you cast 2 Academy Award winning actors at the top of their game in a story this grand, well it just has to work.

P.S. I Love You
You could say it’s the perfect date movie, just make sure you have tissues on hand and prepare yourself for some unexpected belly laughs.

Beowulf
It was like spending 2 hours on a theme park ride. It was that action-packed, loud, over-the-top and in your face, that I am sure I will have to watch it again in 2-D just to get the most out of the story.

Walk Hard
“Walk Hard” is the musical bio-pic to end all bio-pics. Dewey has more affairs than any musician on the planet, takes more mind-altering drugs than Keith Richards and has more hit records than Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and The Beatles put together.

Enchanted
Disney animation meets live-action with “Enchanted”, an exuberant, feel-good fantasy with warmth, humor and some neat song and dance numbers.

Rambo
Rambo is essentially a 1980s thing. It’s from a bygone era, a time when bulging biceps and larger than life action heroes were the norm. In today’s cinema there is not that much of it around anymore. There is something almost prehistoric about this character.

The Karate Kid
It is easy to see why this remarkable motion picture has gained an international fan-base and why it has become one of the most loved film franchises of all-time.

Dirty Dancing
“Dirty Dancing” features some raw, energetic dance sequences and has a spectacular soundtrack as a backdrop.

The Idolmaker
Before “American Idol”, there was the foot tapping musical “The Idolmaker”. A rousing motion picture that takes audiences behind the scenes of the pop music industry of the 1960s.

Kings Of The Sun
This multi-faceted spectacle succeeds in taking you to another time and place while making you believe that the strong human drama is unfolding before you.

Purple Rain
“Purple Rain” is a stylish, well photographed film with energetic music performances. Today it serves as a time capsule of a time and place when Prince’s freshness spelt hip and cool for the 1980s generation.

Hercules In New York
"Hercules in New York" is certainly an unusual time capsule. It may seem a little peculiar when viewed today but in its own crazy way it is sure to put a smile on your face.

Double Dragon
“Double Dragon” looks a little outdated these days and comes with a cavalcade of cheap special effects that look corny by today’s standards.

Beowulf (1999)
“Beowulf” is one of those films that you take in your stride and if you don’t think about it too much, you might just enjoy some of the nonsense and that's only if the techno-soundtrack doesn't grate on you.

Tarzan The Ape Man
The film is well known for its slow motion action sequences, the constant echo of Richard Harris' booming voice and of course a beautiful, scantily clad Bo Derek parading amongst waterfalls and beaches while a speechless Tarzan gapes in anticipation.

Dragstrip Girl
Sadly “Dragstrip Girl”, lacks energy and plods along like a hot rod with a busted radiator. It’s no more than cheap teen melodrama with wooden performances and very few thrills.
